What is Islam? (Detailed Explanation)

Islam is a complete religion revealed by Allah (God) for the guidance of all humanity. The word Islam comes from the Arabic root “Salam”, which means peace, submission, and obedience to the will of Allah.

Definition of Islam

Islam means to:

  • Believe in One God (Allah),
  • Worship Him alone,
  • And live according to His commands.

Islam teaches peace, justice, morality, and a balanced way of life.

The Basic Beliefs of Islam (Articles of Faith)

A Muslim believes in six main things:

  1. Belief in Allah
    Allah is One, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.

  2. Belief in Angels
    Angels are created by Allah to carry out His commands.

  3. Belief in Holy Books
    Allah revealed books such as the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the final book, the Holy Qur’an.

  4. Belief in Prophets
    Muslims believe in all prophets sent by Allah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last prophet.

  5. Belief in the Day of Judgment
    All people will be accountable for their actions.

  6. Belief in Divine Decree (Destiny)
    Everything happens according to Allah’s knowledge and wisdom.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five main acts of worship:

  1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith)
    There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

  2. Prayer (Salah)
    Muslims pray five times a day.

  3. Fasting (Sawm)
    Fasting during the month of Ramadan.

  4. Zakat (Charity)
    Giving a fixed portion of wealth to the needy.

  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage)
    Performing pilgrimage to Makkah once in a lifetime if financially and physically able.

Teachings of Islam

Islam teaches Muslims to:

  • Speak the truth
  • Respect parents
  • Help the poor
  • Be honest and just
  • Promote peace and kindness.

Purpose of Islam

The main purpose of Islam is:
