Recommended Actions During Ramadan: A Complete Guide

Ramadan is one of the most blessed months in Islam. It is not only a time for fasting but also a period for spiritual growth, self-discipline, worship, and serving humanity. Those who spend this month in sincere devotion can transform their lives spiritually, morally, and socially. Here is a detailed guide to the essential actions one should perform during Ramadan, based on the Qur’an and Sunnah.

1️ Fasting (Obligatory Worship)

Fasting is the most fundamental act of Ramadan. Allah says in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain righteousness.” (Qur’an 2:183)

Key Aspects of Fasting:

  • Taking Suhoor (pre-dawn meal), which is a Sunnah and brings blessings
  • Making the intention (niyyah) before dawn
  • Avoiding lying, gossip, backbiting, and arguments
  • Controlling the eyes, ears, tongue, and behavior from sinful acts
  • Breaking the fast promptly at Iftar (sunset)

Fasting is not just abstaining from food and drink; it is a full spiritual discipline to refrain from sin.

2️ Performing Prayers

Regular prayer is the backbone of Ramadan.

Special Prayers:

  • Taraweeh: Night prayers performed in Ramadan after Isha
  • Qiyam-ul-Lail / Tahajjud: Late-night voluntary prayers
  • Extra Nafl (optional prayers)

Fasting combined with consistent prayer multiplies the spiritual reward.

3️ Recitation of the Qur’an

Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an, revealed during this blessed period.

Recommended practices:

  • Daily recitation of the Qur’an
  • Completing one or more full Qur’an recitations during the month
  • Reading Tafsir (exegesis) to understand meanings
  • Reflecting on the verses (Tadabbur)
  • Acting upon the teachings of the Qur’an

Prophet Muhammad used to review the Qur’an with Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) during Ramadan.

4️ Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

Keep your tongue active in remembrance of Allah:

  • SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)
  • Alhamdulillah (All praise is for Allah)
  • Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
  • La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)
  • Astaghfirullah (I seek Allah’s forgiveness)
  • Sending Salawat (blessings) on the Prophet )

Special supplication recommended during Ramadan:

“Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fafu annee”
(O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me).

5️ Making Du’a (Supplication)

Ramadan is the month when prayers are answered, particularly:

  • At Iftar
  • During Suhoor
  • In Tahajjud prayers
  • On Laylat al-Qadr

Prayers should include personal needs, family, the Muslim Ummah, and guidance in this life and the Hereafter.

6️ Charity and Good Deeds

Generosity reaches its peak in Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad was most charitable during this month.

Forms of charity:

  • Paying Zakat
  • Giving Sadaqah (voluntary charity)
  • Paying Fitrana
  • Providing Iftar for the fasting
  • Helping the needy financially or materially

The Prophet said that whoever feeds a fasting person will receive the same reward as the one who fasts, without decreasing their reward.

7️ Seeking Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Decree) is in the last ten nights, especially the odd nights.

Recommended actions:

  • Extra voluntary prayers (Nafl)
  • Reciting Qur’an
  • Continuous Du’a and Istighfar
  • Sincere repentance
  • Tearful and humble devotion

This night is better than a thousand months (Qur’an 97:3).

8️ I’tikaf (Spiritual Retreat)

Performing I’tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan is Sunnah.
It involves seclusion in the mosque with the sole purpose of worshiping Allah.
Even a few hours of focused worship in the mosque counts if full I’tikaf is not possible.

9️ Improving Morals

Ramadan is a month of character refinement.

Avoid:

  • Gossip
  • Lying
  • Envy
  • Fighting and anger
  • Wasting time on frivolous matters

Prophet said that fasting is not complete if one does not leave bad speech and immoral acts.

🔟 Patience and Endurance

Ramadan is known as “the month of patience.”

  • Controlling anger
  • Enduring hunger and thirst
  • Practicing perseverance in worship and life challenges

1️1️ Kindness to Parents and Relatives

  • Serving parents and elders
  • Maintaining family ties
  • Forgiving past disputes
  • Resolving conflicts peacefully

Ramadan cleanses hearts and encourages reconciliation and harmony.

1️2️ Self-Reflection and Repentance

Ramadan is the best time for self-accountability and repentance:

Steps of repentance:

1.   Feeling regret for past sins

2.   Immediately abandoning sin

3.   Firm intention to never return to it

1️3️ Time Management

Time is precious in Ramadan. Recommended practices:

  • Avoiding wasting time on unbeneficial activities
  • Limiting excessive use of TV, mobile, and social media
  • Following a structured worship schedule

1️4️ Congregational Worship

  • Performing prayers in congregation
  • Attending Taraweeh in the mosque
  • Participating in Iftar gatherings
  • Attending religious lectures and study circles

These activities strengthen faith, create unity, and foster community spirit.
